Welcome to the Orca Dive Club Mauritius newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading all our latest news and we hope to see you under the water again soon. Have a great Summer!
It's really rare to find leaf fish… but maybe this is just because we don't recognize them? Here in Mauritius, we don't have a literal invasion but it is really quite common to find them, especially on the dive spot Lion Reef, where we often see three or four of these fish on a typical dive. You do have to keep your eyes peeled though… as these special fish really don't look all that fishy at all!
We are pleased to report that we saw the first humpback whale of this season on 21st June. We were enjoying a dive on the wreck of the Silver Star when the whale passed directly over the heads of the divers. Over the next few weeks we expect many more opportunities for whale watching as this is the peak period for seeing whales around the northwest coast. We'll keep you posted.
Here in Mauritius we are always keen to embrace the latest technological innovations. Now, we can bring you news of our latest piece of kit – the tubeless regulator! Orca Dive Club Mauritius has been given the important job of testing this new product. The first test period is now complete and we have a lot of positive feedback to report. So confident are we in this new product, that for the second test period we are going to offer this unique product for rental to our guests. We already have a lot of interest from several well-known manufacturing brands and hope to bring you more news on this and other exciting Orca product innovations soon…
There is a new seafood restaurant in Grand Baie, close to Pereybere. This is not a deluxe restaurant geared towards tourists, but a nice place serving good quality local food. The prices are really reasonable with a complete meal including drinks costing around 10euros, with plenty of choice on the whole menu. The menu is written in English and French and offers a selection of different seafood dishes, and also lamb and beef for meat lovers.
Just to tickle your tastebuds, you can try octopus in creole sauce, shrimps and prawns in garlic sauce, calamari salad in lemon sauce, fresh grilled seabream and much more. As a side dish, you can choose fried rice with egg and chicken, and for dessert, flambé bananas or pineapple with the best coconut ice cream on the island…… Hmmmm.
At the weekend, sometimes there is a spontaneous concert with guitar and accordion to entertain you. The owner is a great source of information on the island and will keep you chatting late into the evening with his amusing tales and pieces of wisdom on Mauritian life. Come and join us!
